Deryle Mehrten has written a Review of various sizes of CO² cartridges and how he modified an inexpensive air pump from Wal~Mart. If you elect to use one of these inexpensive air pumps, you should not run it more than about 5 minutes at a time, then let it cool for 20 minutes or so. Also, include a couple of long tywraps in your kit. These can be looped around the pump and a foot peg, or other item on the bike to keep the pump out of the dirt.

Fritz Curtis also has bought a small compressor Fritz Curtis's compressor from Wal~Mart and removed the case.

Harbor Freight has a small imported compressor for under $10.
