Multimodal Day Trip

Suitable for Saturday or Sunday

Route

From North Vernon, go east on US 50 about 20 miles, to the outskirts of Versailles. At the stop sign, turn north on US 421 and proceed north to Napoleon. At the blinker in Napoleon you will find the beginning of IN 229. Proceed east on 229 (boring) until it turns north. Now the boring ends and the curves begin. You'll pass through the town of Batesville and the historic Sherman Inn, named for some damned arsonist who slept in Batesville once. Eventually, IN 229 will end at US 52. Turn right and go about 50 yards and take the road to the right, just before the rail crossing. Go just past the water powered mill and find a place to park the bike.

Many things to do in the small state park of Metamora. Take a 30 minute train ride, and get a good view of the wooden aquaduct and the locks. Take a 30 minute canal ride on the Ben Franklin III, a horse drawn boat. You'll pass over/through a wooden aquaduct as the boat crosses over the Whitewater river. The train and boat each leave on the hour, with the first train at 11, the last train at 4, and the first boat at noon.

Eat lunch at CJ's, eat ice cream and look at cookie jars at Granny's. There is a marvelous fudge shop on the far east end of the town, near the wooden aquaduct. When looking for shops, look for the flags on the front of the shops. The flags indicate that that particular shop is open.

Return to the rally via the same route. Be sure to be back on Saturday before 5 PM for the awards and door prizes.
